After a long period of deliberation, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced this week that they would be slightly altering the wording of some of this year’s Emmy Award categories, specifically adding quotation marks to the word “Outstanding” in the Lead Actor in a Comedy category.
“We looked at who the front-runners were, and we figured it was a good pre-emptive measure,” explained Academy Chairman Martin Glenndale. “By the looks of things, this year’s nominees are going to include Ray Romano, Kevin James, and for some inexplicable reason Matt LeBlanc again. If any one of them wins, it would hardly be fair to call them Outstanding. I mean, there’s a credibility issue here.”
Other members of the academy claim the monetary concerns also played a factor in determining the category’s new format.
“We thought about leaving off the quotations and just adding ‘by default’ at the end, but the quote we got from the engraver would have exceeded our budget.” Said Academy Treasurer Lucille Abernathy. “That’s why John Ratzenberger never got nominated.”
Some industry analysts praised the move and acknowledge the Academy’s commitment to not lower its standards.
“Larry David could be nominated again, and I guess that wouldn’t be awful,” said Entertainment Weekly’s television editor Norman Redpot. “But, at the same time, he pretty much plays himself. Even if he wins, does that make him an Outstanding actor? Maybe compared to Jim Belushi, but that’s not saying much.”
Some past and potential nominees expressed disdain over the academy’s decision.
“Yeah, I made $8 million dollars for the show last year,” said Ray Romano, star of the popular sit-com ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. “And, yeah, that was an ego boost. But what I really want is one of those little gold statues. More than money, more than respect, more than my family’s love, that’s what I want. Now, even if I win, it will be tainted. This sucks.”
“Obviously, we’re upset if people think this is a reflection on the character of the nominees.” Glenndale offered as solace. “I’m sure they’re all good people, just terrible actors. Now, Alan Alda, Ed Asner, even Kelsey Grammer- those guys were Outstanding Actors, but despicable human beings. Even with the ones that gave decent performances this year, like Jason Bateman maybe, I’d be embarrassed for them to have an Emmy. I mean, have you seen Teen Wolf Too?”
Some of the other changes made by the Academy are also drawing criticism. The Writer’s Guild of America has lodged an official complaint over the re-formatted category “Outstanding” “Achievement” in “Writing” for a “Comedy” Series.
"the Academy’s commitment to not lower its standards."
That's funny. The "academy" could have written yesterday's fellatio article. They've sucked and stroked more celebrities than the entire cast of Baywatch. (that includes you Dave) You have to wonder if the "academy members think their jobs are important...
