The Happy Couple
Broadway Producer Cameron MacIntosh, the man behind such successes as “Les Miserables” and “Miss Saigon”, has announced that his next project will be a lavish stage musical entitled “Corey and Topanga”, based the on the characters from the popular ABC-TV series “Boy Meets World”.
“The biggest hit musicals of the past ten years- Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Footloose, Saturday Night Fever, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Full Monty, The Producers, Hairspray, and now Spamalot- have all been based on movies,” MacIntosh explained. “I’m just trying to stay ahead a of the curve by doing a musical based on a TV show.”
Macintosh was quick to caution fans of the series not to expect a complete representation.
“It would be fool-hardy to try and encapsulate the series seven-year run into one three-hour show,” he explained. “That’s why we’ll focusing entirely on that portion of season five when Corey and Topanga’s relationship faced its greatest challenges. Of course, Shawn and Mr. Feeney and the Matthewses will have their parts to play, but I don’t want people to show up hoping to see a lot of Eric’s hilarious antics. Because they won’t”
“The show is very much about a romance in peril,” said James Lapine, who has been hired to write the book. “It’s been a difficult process, because it’s meant having to go back and re-watch all those heart-breaking episodes from the spring of 1998, when we didn’t know if Corey would be tempted by Lauren, or if Topanga would realize her true devotion. Of course, this time I know that it all turns out okay, but it’s still a raw set of nerves.
Perfection
“Ross and Rachel, Sam and Diane, Mork and Mindy, they’re all trifles.” the writer went on. “Corey and Topanga are the most complex, nuanced, and compelling couple in television history. I’m pleased to have a part in brining that to the stage.”
When asked about casting, MacIntosh was understandably reticent.
“Danielle Fishel is, in all honestly, the most beautiful creature ever to walk the planet, so finding someone for that role will be difficult,” the producer said. “Plus, keep in mind that Topanga was a valedictory-level scholar, so we’d need to find someone who is beautiful, smart, talented, and funny. Most actresses can barely pull off two of the four. Still. I’m hopeful.
The Dude from St. Elsewhere
“Fortunately, we’ve been in talks with William Daniels about reprising the role of Mr. Feeney,” he continued. “Apparently he was in some Broadway musical back in the seventies, so he’s got experience. Plus, he was the voice of KITT on that show ‘Knight Rider’, so that will please people from the flyover.”
Macintosh was much more forthcoming when asked if audiences should expect more of the type of spectacle he is known for, such as the helicopter in “Miss Saigon.”
“Audiences are in for all of the same drama, comedy, and mind-blowing theatrics that my name suggests.” he said. “For example, at the end of Act II, when Corey’s world is crumbling around him, the set is going to literally crumble around him, just to make sure everyone gets the point. As the saying goes, Subtlety is for Off-Broadway.”
I'm pre-ordering tickets for this one. This keeps my hope alive that "TGI Friday the Musical" will finally make it to Broadway.

Jesus, I hope something bad happens in class and Mr.Feeney is forced to slap Corey in the face with his junk and will then be forced to expose Topanga's breastial area for no good reason!!! Hopefully Corey's older brother, Kevin Arnold, will make a cameo with Wayne and he'll call Kevin "scrot."

This is awesome. The intrigue into whether Cory would leave Topanga for Lauren kept me glued to the couch for weeks. Now, of course, I need only wait for a Boy Meets World marathon on ABC Family. The heartbreak of knowing that Cory lied to Topanga about kissing her. Only their true love could pull them through. This will be the greatest musical since Zach and the Bayside gang had a band on Saved by the Bell.

Don't know if it will please people from the flyover, though.

Thanks to that bodacious picture of Danielle Fishel, this is officially the first Phat Phree piece I can 'rub one out' to. Congratulations, Dave!
